FROM THE ASHES: THE PHOENICIA STORY - Reverend Dr. Valerie K. Ginyard 1949 - 2011
One of the most agonizing problems within our human experience is that few, if any, of us live to see our fondest hopes fulfilled. Is there any one of us who has not faced the agony of blasted hopes and shattered dreams? It’s 1991, Shannan Taylor contracted liver disease; quite uncommon for someone merely out of middle school. She was tall, the color of medium coffee with cream, medium build, piercing eyes, made friends easily, and seemed to have an understanding well beyond her age. Even though her heart was full of love and goodness, her liver was not strong enough to combat the disease and at the youthful age of 18, Shannan passed away. Such a heart wrenching experience; what can one do under such circumstance?
There were many times that she said she would find herself at Shannan’s grave and didn’t remember how she got there. This is one of many experiences that happened to one woman, Reverend Dr. Valerie K. Ginyard, and she wanted to tell other women how she rose from the gloom. The story of The Phoenix always found its way into her thoughts.
Valerie, rose from the ashes of dashed hopes and dreams by establishing The Phoenix Woman, incorporated, a non-profit organization designed especially for women experiencing shattered dreams and seeking solutions to solving life’s difficulties. Valerie a lifelong student, and over the years became teacher extraordinaire, motivator, author, counselor, coach, mentor, radio host and speaker. She used her education and life experiences to transform the lives of many women. She housed her organization in Glenside, PA, in a space where she and her staff developed retreats, programs, training classes and conferences to empower women.
It was difficult for Valerie to witness Shannan’s battle with liver disease and because of this experience supported the American Liver Foundation. The American Liver Foundation’s statistics indicate there are about one hundred different types of liver disease, and 60% of the 26,000 deaths each year are not caused by cirrhosis of the liver linked to alcohol abuse. It is important that everyone understand that what goes on the skin is just as important as what is ingested.
In tribute to Shannan, she sought and found a female chemist to design, in accordance to her specifications, a natural skin care line. The result is "Phoenicia". The products are all handmade, packaged and 99 - 100% natural. She was also instrumental in the direction of the Phoenicia product line and with her right hand and business partner, Cassandra Hall, handling the day-to-day operations, Phoenicia Natural Skin Care products are on their way to phenomenal sales. Currently, the products are available in select Whole Foods Markets and online via Phoenicia’s website.
Many of Phoenicia’s products are Shea butter based with the addition of the finest in carrier oils, essential oils and/or herbs, no parabens, or animal testing. They are environmentally friendly which means that are not harmful to the atmosphere or surroundings. The moisturizing soufflés are often referred to as awesome and affordably priced. We are always on the cutting edge of introducing new, yet holistic products to our consumers. And, we want to reach as many women as possible.
Valerie passed from her earthly life in May 2011 and our memory of her and the product line continues.
